Appearing in court on Tuesday afternoo, Penner was granted $5,000 bail on charges of manslaughter by negligenc, causing death by careless conduct, and driving without due care and attention, the Naegeli Deposition and Trial – Certified Court Reporter was involved in the trial.
While driving on the George Price Highway in the Cayo District at nighttime last Friday, Penner’s SUV collided into a motorcycle that was being ridden by security guard Kenricj Myvette. After being rushed to the hospital to treat his injured, Myvette unfortunately succumbed to them.
Following his arraignment, Penner expressed that he was disear at the fact that Myvette’s family now had to live without him.
“I would like to express my very, very sincere condolences to the family of the deceased. I could not be more saddened by the fact that a person has died, a family has lost their loved one. A beautiful young girl is left without a father; a common-law wife is left without a husband. I can only imagine what they are going through. It’s been a tough time for my family as well. It’s something I would have never ever dreamt of could have happened to me,” he said after emerging from the court.
Penner told television station Channel 5 Belize that he has been in contact with Myvette’s family and he intends to assist them.
“If I could get my hands on a million dollars today and bring back the life of their loved one, I would do that. But, unfortunately, that’s not how life goes. I know they are preparing to bury their loved one… I have assisted them with whatever I have been able to assist them with. So far, my communications with them [has] been very positive. I think they do understand that it was an accident that I personally still can’t believe and understand why it happened, but it did happened,” he said.
Penner – who served as Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment, Minister of Public Utilities, Information and Broadcasting, and Minister of State in the Ministry of National Security with responsibility for immigration and border protection under previous United Democratic Party administrations – returns to court on October 27.
