BROOKLYN: *SHOOTING* MACON ST & THROOP AVE, LVL ONE MOB CALLED IN REGARDS TO A MALE SHOT, MNS811 (c) [MNS463]
Macon St & Throop Ave
Brooklyn, NY
1/10/2013 9:39 p.m.

Update January 11, 11:10 a.m.: The deceased victim of this incident has been identified as Ivan Giovanettina, former owner of Blu York Cafe. Click here to read the story Bed-Stuy Patch ran on him in 2011. Blue York has since closed and reopened in 2012 as Island Salad.

-----*-----

Police are looking for two male suspects responsible for shooting and killing a man near the corner of Throop Avenue and Macon Street Thursday night.

The shooting took place at approximately 9:30 p.m. When police arrived at the scene, they found the man -- who remains undidentified -- lying on the ground, bleeding with gunshot wounds to his stomach.

One witness to the shooting said she was exiting a corner store when she heard several gunshots. She said she then saw two men running eastbound on Macon Street away from where the victim laid injured, according to police.

A few neighbors who said they were familiar with the victim said they believe he was around 41 years old. The victim had no identification on him.

The victim was taken to Kings County Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 9:48 p.m.

Investigators are canvassing the scene for more evidence, and the investigation is ongoing.

chocolate city it's on its way to being whitebread world.. lol
We have a slight lead but we are no longer "Chocolate City"

The black population in the District has lost its outright majority for the first time in more than half a century, in a population shift driven by a higher cost of living and an influx of younger whites into the nation's capital, new census data released Thursday show.

The shift makes D.C. unique among the nation's major cities, said Lisa Sturtevant, assistant research professor at George Mason University's Center for Regional Analysis.

"Lots of cities grew in last few decades," she said. "Washington, D.C. was the only city where growth was driven by the white population."

The number of non-Hispanic whites living in the District since data were collected in April 2010 has grown by 4 percent to total more than 218,000 as of July 2011, according to the new Census Bureau data. Meanwhile, the number of Blacks stayed relatively flat but fell from just over half of the population to 304,203 people, or 49.2 percent.

The white population now makes up 35.3 percent of the city's total pie. This marks the highest percentage of whites living in the District since the 1960s, when whites were leaving the city for the region's more spacious suburbs.

Though Washington was a natural attraction for freed slaves following the Civil War, the city remained majority-white until 1960, when blacks made up more than 53 percent of the residents, according to census data.

The black population peaked in 1970 at more than 71 percent of the population.

But now, because of the urban revitalization that began in cities more than a decade ago, housing prices are climbing in the District and lower-income residents are being priced out of the District. Since 2000, nearly 40,000 blacks have left D.C., according to census data.

Mark Mather, a demographer with the Population Reference Bureau, said it's likely whites will continue to gain a larger share in the District.

"I can't think of any economic or social trend that would lead to a reversal of what we're seeing right now," he said. "There hasn't been a lot of progress made in terms of retaining African-American families in the city. I think we're going to continue to see out-migration into Prince George's County."

Mayor Vincent Gray and Council Chairman Kwame Brown were unavailable for comment Thursday evening.

Meanwhile, the growing white population in the District isn't necessarily coming from the suburbs, as Sturtevant noted the population there among whites has stayed relatively flat. Rather, it's young singles driving the bulk of the growth as the city's job market remained among the strongest in the country -- even through the lean recession years.

Recently, though, families with young children have been adding to the white population's growth, according to Mather.

This will most likely happen...but the one thing about DC..is what we have seen and experienced in the most powerful city in this country..is black ppl at any and all levels..competing in ways u dont see elswhere.

Wonders when NY will have a black mayor?

Fact is..whites r moving in.blacks lost the outright majority as we slipped under 50%..but keep in mind whites make up around 39%..so there are still more blk pl than any other group

Triniameri..it's still chocolate city as there are still more blks than any other group. There was an article not that long ago focusing on how headlines are used to get a certain result. By saying blks are no longer majority..they are promoting this to make more ppl ..WHITE ppl comfy enough to make a move. Giving them a false sense if numbers with the thought those headlines will manifest themselves. It's truly a shame what they doing. White ppl sucking the culture from everything..culture vultures

different dynamic.. different city.

same way most of the prime ministers/presidents in the caribbean have been people of Color... yet the US is only now getting it's first President of Color..

the caribbean has had female heads of state, hell india and other countries have also had the same.. yet in the US has never had a female president.. so it's really just the different dynamics at play...

give it time..

LR.. Pres being if color is not a big deal considering most ppl in the Carib are ppl of color..so the US having one where we make u 13%....no where near majority is an accomplishment considering our particular history..

It really cannot b compared...whereas comparing 2 cities in the same country that once shared similar dynamics is reasonable

Didn't read much of thread but the mayor thing is interesting ... We had some black mayors in majority black cities and then there seem to have been regression .... Chicago ny clleavland

People out of dc don't understand the Barry thing .... Really does not matter how much good you do but as a mayor to be caught with crack is crazy..... But of course dc black folx were disenfranchised and the whole taxes without representation, they did not trust the powers that be. The whole Barry thing appeared to be a set up or entrapment to the constituents and maybe it was ... Barry though is tougher than Teflon..... He aight lol

Mofo's couldn't get him on anything else but his personal life...he never stole from the city, always took care of the young and the elderly...All of PG County should be grateful to him because he was the one that laid the groundwork and created those marvelous suburbs as well as jobs for the people that live in them....DC you see today Barry had envisioned and got the wheels turning long time ago #realtalk
