What makes him indifferent?

Are we absolutely sure that all the facts are out? Are we absolutely sure Barneys triggered the incidents? To me from a business standpoint pulling out now before everything is investigated would leave him in a position where other businesses may think hard about dealing with him as it would show he is too emotional and willing to sever relationships without having all the information. What if it turns out that it wasn't Barney's fault then what? Is the black community that wants knee jerk reaction going to replace what he loses?

So, in other words...you can understand why he wouldn't make a knee-jerk reaction. He's still on his WAY UP, and can't afford to lose these relationships. Though if it was the other way around, they would have made knee jerk reactions and dropped Jay Z.

I.E. Ludacris and Pepsi....Reebok and Rick Ro$$ of late.(though they re-contracted)

Precisely. Big established worldwide brands can afford to do that. Is not like black people organized enough even in the country where it's produced to say fock u we taking a stand and not subscribe to the product. Jay Z on the otherhand despite being a megastar, where business is concerned he is not quite in that stratosphere yet. Until all info is available and a complete (or as close to it as possible) understanding can be had he needs to stay cool and do what he do.

not so much the relationship, but he is sending out a signal to other future business contacts, that they dont have to worry about him pandering to protests.

Most of Jay Z's records are purchased by whites, so his heart is where his money is. He never struck me as someone who operates on any principle outside of money/materialism. As with others, money is his god that controls his decisions.

Didn't he in his statement say that the partnership was for his charitable organization with 100% of the proceeds going towards the charity and not into his pocket.....hence why he wasn't quick to sever ties because it's not him who loses out of the funds?
Is this a lie or an inaccuracy reported on his part?

Feel like I read this somewhere myself.

In his statement, Jay said that, while he opposes "discrimination of any kind," he's won't make a decision about the future of the collaboration until after a meeting between community leaders and Barneys, because that would ultimately harm "all the people that stand a chance at higher education." The rapper's partnership with the retailer benefits his Shawn Carter Foundation, a charity that awards scholarships to students facing socio-economic hardships.

"If I make snap judgments, no matter who it's towards, aren't I committing the same sin as someone who profiles?" Jay asks in a statement posted over the weekend. "I am no stranger to being profiled and I truly empathize with anyone that has been put in that position. Hopefully this brings forth a dialogue to effect real change."

but even without Barney's partnership he's worth enough and liquid enough to fund a few students on his own. Pennies in a bucket.

Dear Jay-Z:

I’m a 14-year-old that lives in the suburbs of Maryland. Sometimes I listen to your music, but Kendrick Lamar is more my style as well as some 80’s music. Although I applaud your efforts in donating profits from your Barney’s collection, I do question one of the items.

As you may know, racial profiling is something that us young black boys have to deal with. It doesn’t matter if you live in the suburbs of Maryland or Brooklyn. When I tell my mother that I’m going out, even during the afternoon, she always warns me to be careful. It’s not that I’m out there wildin’ out or anything but she knows what can happen to young black men.

Although I don’t feel as though people should be policed, for a lack of a better word, in what they wear, your ski-mask screams, “Profile me, 5-0. I’m a young black man with a skull-mask on and I must be up to no good.” Bank robbers commonly wear ski-mask covering their faces. If you happen to be racing on the Iditarod, you may need a ski mask covering your face. But if I’m walking down the street at night with a ski-mask on, I’m quite sure the cops in my county will not think I’m an Iditarod racer, but someone who just committed a crime.

As much as I like cashmere, my grandfather just bought me some cashmere sweaters; I think I’ll pass on this cashmere ski mask. 1) Because $695 is crazy — and 2) I’d like to live to see 25. I’m sure you already know those statistics about black men.

Jaden Steele is a 14-year-old high-school freshman living in Maryland and plans on majoring in Biochemistry in college.

more in the link

A company, looking to go younger, hipper or more demographically diverse, signs a lucrative endorsement deal with that year’s “it” celebrity, hoping the star’s fans will follow, Pied Piper-like, straight to the cash register.

Then a public-relations disaster strikes. Madonna dances in front of burning crosses in her “Like a Prayer” video, and Pepsi, stunned by the blowback, suddenly calls off its multimillion-dollar deal with the singer. Tiger Woods gets caught in a marital scandal of colossal proportions and Tag Heuer, Accenture and AT&T all decide to sever ties. Paula Deen admits to having used racial epithets and loses her place at Sears, Kmart and Walgreens.

But this time it’s different. This time it’s the celebrity (in this case Jay Z, the rapper-turned-corporate-conglomerate) whose carefully burnished image has been potentially tarnished by a deal with a big company (in this case, Barneys New York) going through a public-relations nightmare of its own.

There is some irony in him using a store like Barney's who unapologetically profiles its black customers to fundraise for disenfranchised black youths.

I'd love to know exactly how lucrative this arrangement with them is to see if its worth the P.R. nightmare he is facing.....even if the money isnt going into his pocket but to his charities it must be worthwhile. Kinda like the moral dilemma many religious organizations face when the run casinos and bingos to raise money.

unless he has a bunch of orgs and i'm mistaken

to me this one isn't really for disenfranchised youth. Its for they kids that already helped themselves graduated HS well and have gained acceptance to unis. but dont have the $ to go.

either situation i guess still irony there
