Mayor Tim Kee: Too much vulgar behaviour

(Story Updated: Mar 4, 2014 at 11:31 PM ECT )

All the soca songs say wine down low and jam on a bumper, and while masqueraders eagerly follow these instructions, Port of Spain Mayor Raymond Tim Kee finds their behaviour “vulgar and reprehensible”.

“That is not Carnival. That is rank, vulgar behaviour. You can enjoy yourself in a way you will not believe without going to those levels. Children are looking. I see some women do some things with some men—nothing for the imagination: you can’t do that. What about our guests who come here, our tourists? And it’s the adults doing it and blaming young people, but they do it and they promote it and sustain it and I am against that,” Tim Kee told reporters yesterday at the Downtown Carnival judging point on South Quay, Port of Spain.

Tim Kee described some of the costumes he saw as “unacceptable—almost like a beach party on the street”.

“I hate to say this—some women just don’t care,” he said.

Aside from this moral stance, Tim Kee found, for the most part, his first Carnival as mayor was “quite good”.

Apart from the South Quay spot, he also visited the judging point at Piccadilly Greens and everything there was well—nice and peaceful, he said.

Tim Kee acknowledged the slow pace in band traffic to South Quay and said while he believed the concentration of bands will likely be at the Queen’s Park Savannah, he would not be visiting there—nor the controversial Socadrome at Jean Pierre Complex in Woodbrook.

“My visit (uptown) will be to check and see what is happening, not to get involved, because I’ve got several calls from burgesses this morning about the inconvenience, with some sick and elderly people who fear if an emergency were to arise how they would get out,” he said.

The concerns of residents, and the other perennial pre-Carnival problems like routes, cannot be and should not be an annual issue, he said.

“(Planning) requires some serious and objective conversations and discussion with a view to regularising Carnival so it wouldn’t be provoking confusions and bacchanal every year. People misunderstand the bacchanal for Carnival. Bacchanal should be on the streets, not in the communities.”

Tim Kee said the PoS City Corporation’s responsibility was not to decide on the route, but mainly security.

“When it comes to routes we have no control, no say over that. All I can do is provoke discussions over the next two or three weeks after Carnival looking to put something—a complement of people—veterans and youth (to deal with it). It can’t be just a week, it has to be ongoing to get all the stakeholders involved, most importantly the public.”

He said he will be making his own notes on possible improvements as he observes the Carnival celebrations throughout the day, but will keep his ideas close to his chest because he did not want anyone piggybacking on his plans. He said he was willing to listen and contribute to the different objective analyses.

The mayor added that from the reports he was receiving from the Police Service, this Carnival appeared to be one of the safest.

From my experience a very high percentage of the folks who behaviour vulgar and disgusting on Carnival day are Trinis or foreigners based abroad. That is not to say that the locals who don't want to be outdone don't try to do the same.

At the end of the day vulgarity and bacchanal has always been part of carnival from the very earliest days but obviously if children are looking on then responsible adults should conduct themselves appropriately in front of young impressionable children even on carnival day.

Every generation pushes the envelope. What our parents did in the eyes of our grand, surely made them clutch their chest...just as our generation made our parents gasp and eyes bug out, etc.

They cannot stop nor police it...$$$$$$$$$$$$ (MONEY)

I've seen it in all carnival fetes with all caribbean nationals....there is always a section of people who cross the line e.g. holding up the woman legs in the cradle of your arms and lifting her crotch and swinging down into your crotch.....y'all know the sexual position right.

Right.....that right there in public is crossing the line with children all around.

Highly doubt, I'm almost positive no mas camp is responsible. More and more of these risque costumes you see, are people altering them to suit.

carnival is to free up... i get that and agree.... but you do have to realize that the youths are around... You cant have people altering dem costumes, some making their own just so they can be exhibitionist on de road... let dem go play mas in a back yard in moruga and do what they want....

had enough of the enhanced woman above but i wont speak much on her

Big Mike: Vulgar mas, no big sin
By JULIEN NEAVES Saturday, March 8 2014 (T&T Newsday)
Big Mike Legacy 01.jpg

LEGACY bandleader Mike “Big Mike” Antoine says the country’s leaders should not focus on the minor issue of vulgarity in Carnival but the major issue of crime in the country.

“The nudity would not affect people so much. They would just...ask people to put on some clothes and that’s it. It wouldn’t hamper or kill or damage or wreck anybody’s (mind) or send them mad. What will send us mad or what will affect us in a big way is the crime. So I think the leaders should focus more on the bad, bad things that happening in the country rather than watching these women,” he said.

Antoine was responding to comments by Archbishop Joseph Harris in his Ash Wednesday message that the lascivious and lewd behaviour by some revellers has nothing to do with our culture and was an aspect of national life that needed to be transformed. Secretary General of Hindu organisation Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha Sat Maharaj also commented that some female revellers are “virtually naked” and taxpayers’ money was being spent to corrupt the nation’s children.

Antoine, speaking to Newsday yesterday, said he respected every man’s opinion but the religious leaders have to respect the opinion of the masqueraders as well.

“When the Master (God) calls he will choose the good from bad. And if they (the religious leaders) do wrong then they will pay for it and if the people who (showcase) nudity they will pay for it. Everybody expresses themself in different ways. Who without sin cast the first stone,” he said.

Questioned whether there was more vulgarity and lewdness over the years, he said it was “always there”, pointing to portrayals of jab jabs in little clothing. He noted that it was happening now more because more women are playing mas and “everybody sexualising everything”.

He pointed out that he has been designing costumes for more than 30 years and he is doing almost the same thing, and it was a similar case with other bands. He said some masqueraders may take their costume then go and get their own pasties and paint, but that cannot be stopped or criticised.

He said the leaders in Trinidad should be concerned about stopping crime and speak more against it.

“Because that is what disturbs us. The nudity in the street don’t disturb us so much. Unless we might feel sexy. Nudity might give some of us who pervert(ed)...feel to go home to have sex or have sex in the street or whatever. But what disturbing us here is the crime and what these leaders should do is deal with the things that affect us most,” he said.

Ronnie and Caro bandleader Ronnie McIntosh commented on the issue during a media conference yesterday.

He noted he has seen the attire of the female masquerader “taking it to another level”, including small pasties or large breasts.

He said a lot of the females “who take it to the extra, who go the extreme” are not based in this country, adding that in Trinidad, “everybody knows everybody and some of the extreme ones none of us could say we know them”.

“A lot of people who behave like this are not from Trinidad or are not living in Trinidad. We need to investigate that. These are people based outside and they come home and they decide that ‘well nobody eh know meh nah’. Because Trinidadians are still conservative. Because don’t forget we still have to go back to work Wednesday morning,” he said.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Very good points made by Big Mike and Ronnie McIntosh in last two paragraphs and that has also been my observation.

For example I personally know a chick from London who would never dare go bare breasts for Notting Hill Carnival but decided to do that when she went to Trinidad for Carnival because few people there know her and she would be flying back out right after carnival.
I was shocked when I saw the photos of her in Trinidad playing mas with no bra on but just with paint work covering her boobs and now whenever I see her in a Soca fete in London playing innocent I think of the shocking pictures I saw of her in Trinidad and can only shake my head.

What the T&T media needs to do together with the backing of the Mayor and the police service for next year Carnival is to announce in advance that anyone found breaking public decency laws for carnival and crossing the line will be arrested and fined for public indecency. They also need to clearly state what the laws regards public indecency are so folks cannot claim naivety.

Bandleaders should also warn their masqueraders who want to alter their costumes that they will not be allowed to follow their band if they cross the line of decency or that they will not be responsible for them being arrested if the police patrols decide that they have crossed the mark regards public decency while playing with their bands on Carnival Monday and Tuesday.

These measures can easily be put in place and enforced if the authorities in T&T are serious about reducing the vulgarity in carnival and wish to protect the eyes and morals of our impressionable youngsters who are sometimes looking on.

People will only try to push the envelope and cross the line if they are allowed to get away with it without any fines and penalties. Same goes with most forms of crime which take place in T&T and elsewhere.

For me not crossing the line of public decency for carnival are women ensuring that their nipples and pubic area are totally covered and of course not having sex in a public place.

Trinidad is not much different to the USA and most other places in that regard.

If you read my post without your regular clouded emotions you would see I offered a solution that can easily be implemented by the ones who are complaining but I am not one of the ones who is complaining.

Also read the article I posted in this very thread (post #15) regards to Big Mike's comments on the issue and my comments below the article: http://www.islandmix.com/backchat/f...e-he-been-all-these-years-265647/#post4514080
