EBC: PNM won popular vote

Despite the claim that the People's Partnership received the popular vote, statistics from Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) state it was the winning party the People's National Movement which received that prize.

During her concession speech on election night former prime minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said the People's Partnership, which comprises the United National Congress (UNC), Congress of the People (COP), Tobago Organisation of the People (TOP) and the National Joint Action Committee (NJAC), won the popular vote.

But according to the EBC yesterday of the 1,099,279 eligible voters, 734,792 voted which represented 66.84 per cent of the eligible voters.

Of those who voted 2,452 ballots had to be rejected. The PNM got a total of 378,447 votes to take 51.68 per cent of the voters. The runner-up, the UNC, got 290,066 votes or 39.61 per cent. The People's Partnership received a total of 46.65 per cent of the votes.

Independent Liberal Party (ILP) won 5,123 votes while the COP won 6.01 per cent or 43,991 votes.

PNM candidate for Arouca/Maloney Camile Robinson-Regis won the most votes overall with 14,843 out of 18,200 valid votes cast.

The highest number of eligible voters came from the constituency of Moruga/Tableland with 21,132 valid votes. That seat was won by PNM's Dr Lovell Francis.

Of the leaders of the two major political parties, UNC and PNM, Persad-Bissessar won 14,896 votes of the 19,651 valid votes while Dr Keith Rowley won 12,855 of the 16,907 valid votes.

There was actually a 66.84% turnout for the 2015 elections in T&T.

734,792 people voted from a registered electorate of approx. 1.1 miliion who are living in T&T and eligible to vote. See link: Data | Elections And Boundaries Commission

T&T's current population is nearer to 1.5 million but at the last official count in 2010 they listed our population was approx. 1.3 million.

I think there are at least 1 million Trinis living overseas so if foreign-based Trinis were allowed to vote at their local Embassies for general elections they would have a serious influence on the outcome.

Below is summary of official figures released a few days ago for the T&T General Elections 2015.

Based on the EBC official figures, PNM won both the majority of seats in the elections and also the popular vote.

Total electorate = 1,099,279

more than one party cannot have the popular vote, its incorrect to say that PP won 46% of the popular vote and so on. Its only correct to say PNM won the popular vote and won 51% of votes cast and PP won 46% of votes cast...you understand? just correcting you

I was obviously using the word "popular" in the context of the total vote.

I was not arguing anywhere that any party other than PNM won the popular vote.

nope brother you said the wrong thing and i corrected you, you made a mistake simple as that.
Where did I say that any other party other than the PNM won the popular voted?

I simply used the word popular in the context of the total vote but anyone with a working braincell will know that I did not argue anywhere that any other party other than the PNM won the popular vote.
